‘Sunset Thinking’ was written and recorded by myself and Jon in the summer of 2023. Genre-wise I'm calling it 'Post-Yacht' but then, I'm an idiot.

Every element of it, as with all our stuff, is home-recorded, mixed, produced, mastered, sleeve-designed, “promoted” and released by our very own clammy little paws. We remain proudly DIY even if we don’t sound like Shellac. Which, often to my consternation, we do not.

What we didn't make, however, was the beautiful accompanying video by our good friend lejuanix. Check it out, it’s perfect.

'Sunset Thinking’ is my attempt to depict the experience of someone who finds themselves in the role of carer, in a situation where they believed they were a partner, a friend, or family member. It’s a song about dealing with the frustration which arises from trying to help someone suffering with mental health issues. It’s about the strain of attempting to show someone the value in the small, beautiful moments in life. It’s about the tiny victories these wonderful people achieve when they can show you the light coming in through the cracks, if only for a moment.

I’ve been lucky enough to know people like this. I hope I was able to capture some small part of their experience.

‘Sunset Thinking’ is a hymn to the people who help you when you can’t help yourself, those who stand by you when you can’t stand, the people who show patience and kindness and ask nothing in return.

Thank you.

For those on the other side of the coin, the side I know best, here's something I learned, or was taught:

When you’re at your lowest and fear there's no-one there for you, there is. When you are down and believe you can’t get back up, you can. When you think there is no way to continue, there is a way.

There is always someone who cares.

Hope you like the song.

There’s another single coming in May. It’s a disco banger about a haunted music box. It's fine.

Keep It Weird

Martyrs

lyrics

Another day's dawn breaks
Will you feel the same today
As you did yesterday?
And I would pray for you
If I knew what to pray to
And what to say
Let's put a record on
Sing along to our favourite songs
Let the world fade
It's been a long old time since we watched the sunrise
Too much sunset thinking
Your mother calls again
So I repeat the old refrain
"Things are ok", well
Things are about the same
But I've no idea what else to say
From this fading shell
Let's open up the blinds
Lay together bathed in light
Let's keep breathing
It's been a long old road, so many doors have closed
Too much sunset thinking
Counting out the hours
In coffee spoons and flowers
Say "Hi'
Kisses on the corner
A coin for the performer
Say "Hi'
Say "Hi, I'm alright"
You can't be late
When I'll always wait
There's a power in a gesture we should not
Underestimate
There's history in this place
Written on its weathered face
Etched into its base
But our misdemeanours pale
When faced with the sheer scale
Of this torn landscape
If I could hold back the tide I'd hold it with all my might
And face the sky unblinking
Yeah, "it's a wonderful life" we say, instead of goodnight
I'll still wave when I'm sinking
Counting out the hours
In coffee spoons and flowers
Say "Hi'
Kisses on the corner
A coin for the performer
Say "Hi'
Say "Hi, I'm alright"
You can't relate
But I'll always wait
There's a power in a gesture we should not
Underestimate
Watching the seabirds roam
The oceans vast they must have flown
Before they knew where to land
What can I do for you
That could possibly get through to you?
Help me to understand
It's been a long old time since I saw light in your eyes
Too much sunset thinking
Yeah it's a bittersweet sight
Keeps me up at night
Hoping for new beginnings
Counting out the hours
In coffee spoons and flowers
Say "Hi'
Everyone before us
Sings every single chorus
Say "Hi'
Say "Hi, I'm alright"
I'll always wait
For something great
But it's the briefest passing moment I have to
Learn to appreciate
