Final Tally 03:45
At the corner there’s a hotel Take a room and lock the door Unblinking eye to the hallway through the spy-glass Absence of sound above your pulse Burn out those jagged memories You’re only here, there’s only now, hiding from the dead past Red light meant go this time Oh why does my reflection move without me? This mortal coil starts to unwind The final tally’s 0-0 Don’t breathe Don’t breathe a word Welcome to the absurd Red light meant go this time Oh why does my reflection move without me? Losing everything but your mind The shadowed figures now surround me The sunken treasure was a lie So what choice is there but to drown me? And you may judge, that is your right But the last tally’s 0-0 Don’t breathe Don’t breathe a word Welcome to the absurd

Make Me Kind 03:49
When the storm came The trees went down Under a cloud veil We took shelter Find me At your door - that’s fine Make me kind Streetlights arch and sigh I can’t wait To say ‘bye You swirl in a circle of what you were Torn from the pages of your own work This could forever mean that we’re apart But that’s ok Don’t make sorrow your art As the skies clear We look ‘round for our friends As night nears A spectral moon ascends Find me…

Party Town 04:06
When you've everything to live for but no reason to go on "We were at the show tonight Why didn't you come along?" Gazing at the rooftops Imagining the fall "If you can't just be normal We don't wanna know you at all" Saturday night's alright for Psychotic breaks and the like There's no need to ask if I'm alright Submerged in the dark water Waving while you drown "You should be getting out more This is a party town" Listing off the friends I lost When there's no-one around "Have you tried meditation? It helps me when I'm down" Saturday night's alright for Psychotic breaks and the like It's easy to advise when you're alright Sometimes when we reach for help there is nobody there We've been sold a bill of goods Buyer beware Rebuilding from the ground up Remembering we're loved I did not take that rooftop step When push came to shove When push came to shove Saturday night's alright for Psychotic breaks and the like Sometimes when you survive a part of you dies Disturbed, sure, and disconcerting Cry until you smile Even if we have to crawl to Make the final mile

Arcayed 02:55
Midnight at the arcade - white glow in your eyes You’re tired of this old town - reputation, encore, reprise I took it all from the TV when we were young We’re numb If taking control is the endgame? Good luck, son We’re numb Five in the morning - looking out on the sunrise You don’t know what you want yet - but all ships rise with the tide I took it all…

Take a ride to an unknown place and what you were, and what you've known about this world Can be no more Take your suitcase, pack a bag, smile at the pilot, exchange pleasantries Meet at the shore Hold out your hand now I will pull you up Let's make new plans now Your past is corrupt Welcome to the island Where the apples grow Hold on to my hand You don't know what we know Straw man or a wicker man both burn the same, dust off the ashes, greet the sun End the ritual Whistle and I'll come to you, you don't need proof, but only faith, the harvest comes This is renewal Hold out your hand now And I will pull you in Dance on the sand now Wash away your sins Welcome to the island Where the rabbits run Hold on to my hand Before the wind comes Underneath an ancient mask, you smile the smile of ancient times, be still your heart You are home It isn't Gotch v. Hackenschmidt, tale from the crypt, when the fix was in, cross the rampart Traverse the stone Hold up your hands now It's ok to give in Drink in these lands now Ready to begin Hold out your hands now And I will pull you up Let's make new plans now Escape the corrupt Hold out your hands now We're miles & miles away Heed our demands now You are here to stay Welcome to our island Where the apples grow Hold on to my hand You know what we know

Ibushi 03:13
Ibushi's out with pneumonia, then he breaks his arm in the ring And if you can't tell the world's in poor shape from this - you must not be listening No clarity, no charity Perched on the top rope If you can land and you can still stand, then there may be hope There may be hope A history of obfuscation to mask the real threat But we will still blame immigration in our red top gazette Conspiracy is currency Shoulders pinned flat to the mat Let us now blame the victim "Thou shalt not go out dressed like that" There may be hope Staring out of your window At the end of your rope I know you've been low There may be hope In the eyes that you know It's hard to deal with rejection or to show vulnerability But let's not attribute malice to what can be explained by stupidity Loneliness, loneliness You fear what you feel on your own It may be cliche but you can always talk to me, you're never alone Show me the way to go home I'm tired and I'm stuck in my head Show me the way to go home Let's do something else instead.

Izanami 03:46
Fell asleep listening to ghost stories Had a Halloween dream that drew me to the trees Shadows fall across The Hand Of Glory Candlelight licks at the leaves I can't see you No light will guide my way Wake in fright with an unshakeable feeling Was that chilling scene a scene I had seen before? Hooded Man offers death or rebirth Showed me Izanami’s door I can't see you No light will guide my way Silent witch Make live the lich Clutch your charms Forewarned is forearmed I can't see you No light will guide my way Life and dream now Softly become the same.

Overfilled 04:03
We had these plans, we had plans to fill two lifetimes Our hearts were big enough Overfilled An endless summer in soft focus This is what I’ll see at the end, she said An endless summer in soft focus Overfilled It poured through you, out of your fingertips and into me I had never been so in love and I had never been so afraid How I wept when you went away the first time This is what I’ll see at the end… I’d never been in a home so empty, I’d never lived in the heart of the void What could I do? What could I make but more mistakes Anything else Who in the hell is that? This is what I’ll see at the end… Drawling and drooling, what does he think he is? He thinks: Who the hell is that? Now, when I can breathe in long enough, and use the air to brace myself I feel every tearing pain of separation and dissonance of our life bound together and torn apart This is what I’ll see at the end… Overfilled I can never be sorry enough - I can feel shame coursing through my blood The second time you left I left too - the final time You rest in a sunbeam in our garden and we kiss while the kitten plays in the grass This is what I’ll see at the end… Overfilled.

Glisten 03:12
Walking the woods we are never alone Don't you find that? Retrace our steps in the glistening snow Here's we we sat Pull close your collar, shrink into your hood Careful there, now The gurgling cauldron, the chopping of wood Be prepared now Come climb high See for miles Night is nigh Twilight's prize Come climb high Frozen smile Coal black sky No sunrise
10.
Rain falls Huddle in the doorway Tyres spray the droplets From the kerbside They open their umbrellas They spin like Cinderella Mirrored in your eyes We can't get dry so why even try? Collect the droplets on your hat brim fingers stained with newsprint Headlines There's a couple talking Between the raindrops walking Soft, sprinkled words Dance across the rooftops You smile To the sky Wave your glove Goodbye Rainfall Huddle in the doorway Spin like Cinderella
11.
Ah, the only time we were beat Is when we weren't there Losing consciousness, I'm losing hope, losing my hair Count me out Count me out Ah, if we all stand united We cannot fail Beyond ridiculous, beyond compare, beyond the pale Wrap me up Wrap me up Brotherly love Brotherly love In the house of the devil we've peeked in every single room In the land of our fathers we erected a tomb In the house of the devil we learned to resurrect In the land of our fathers we swore we'd never forget Wrap me up Wrap me up
12.
I cannot be where I belong I am not wanted where I am Irony's a vicious bride I'll never be what I could have been I'll never live to live my dreams You have to see the funny side Don't wake me I'm not sleeping I'm just closing my eyes If I can't see What's happening to me Maybe it isn't real Maybe I won't realise If I could drink I would get drunk Forget myself for a few hours That's a sweet relief I'll never have If I could sleep I'd sleep for years And I'd be happy in my dreams You have to weep or you have to laugh Don't wake me… Call down the angels Bring up the storm A curse on your houses Cold for the warm Sound every siren Shake every tree Every man is an island No land is free Start up your brass band Put me on your list Call all your old lovers Tell them what they missed Tear up your journals Burn your Polaroids None of this matters This is the void Keep 'em laughing, boys.

about

Martyrs are Jonathan and Michael.

Their debut album, ‘Un Diavolo In Casa’ is inspired and informed by the lost Giallo film of the same name. Originally released on a very limited run of poor quality VHS tapes in 1982 following an ill-fated and short-lived Italian only cinematic run, the film has never received a wide release, with the original reels believed to be buried in landfill under the 6-lane extension of the Grande Raccordo Anulare, Rome.

With a low-budget shoot beginning in and around the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo in 1978, the Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci inspired horror suffered a troubled production - it’s original director and producer (unnamed) both leaving the set to be replaced by local TV producer Andres Triora, who in turn was replaced by the film’s lead actor Romeo Mortiti who, following the film’s completion, retired from acting and filmmaking completely.

While little is known of the film’s plot, it has been surmised by film historian Antonio Suffragio that it told the tale of a mentally imbalanced interloper visiting a small Italian village which he believes to hold the secret to his disturbing visions. As his investigation of the town becomes more labyrinthine and unsettling, so it is revealed that the town holds a far darker secret than even he imagined. What that secret is and what the denouement of ‘Un Diavolo…’ may be is long lost to the memory of the handful of viewers the film had on its initial release, none of whom have been traced up to the time of this writing. Stranger still - of the tiny number of people involved in the making of the film who still live, none will discuss it.

The trivia surrounding the film is compelling - a rumoured cameo appearance from infamous Japanese professional wrestler Antonio Inoki at the behest of his then-wife, actress Mitsuko Baisho; the death of the film’s screenwriter from unascertainable causes on the final day of the film’s marathon shoot; the checkered history of the funding of the film, rumoured to involve both the Sicilian Mafia and the Yakuza; the careers (or distinct lack) of the major players in the film following its failed release; the film's premiere cancelled and subsequent theatrical screenings cut short following an unexplained fire at a small fleapit cinema just outside Rome; there’s a lot to unpack - but all of it unsubstantiated.

Martyrs’ Jonathan stumbled upon an excerpt of the film’s original soundtrack while living in Italy a number of years ago, while Michael uncovered a one-sheet poster for the film (see cover art), seemingly promoting its aborted UK video release, during his time working with a London cinema.

Following months of research and conjecture, capitalising on these fateful discoveries, the pair embarked on an album that seeks to capture the mystery and misery of the film and its bizarre, almost mythical creation, release and disappearance. Using those rediscovered slivers of sound and artwork as their jumping off point, taking their name from the long-since defunct UK “distributor” of the film, and incorporating influences from '80s arcade games, folk horror and vaporwave, they have built their own iteration of the soundtrack; their own interpretation of an unseen film.

That album, released 40 years to the day of the film's disastrous premiere, is what you have before you now; we hope you enjoy it.

PS If you find a copy of the film, please do drop us a line and let us know - we’d be eternally grateful.
